The regional meeting on combating trafficking in persons through international airports was opened in the United Arab Emirates, on Monday, as according to the global report for the year 2020, issued by the "United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime" on trafficking in persons 2020, the countries of the Middle East and the Gulf are highly concerned. The UAE is a major party in the global campaign to combat human trafficking. It was the first country in the region to enact a comprehensive anti-trafficking law, Federal Law No. 51 of 2006
The dialogue at the meeting revolved around the importance that combating human trafficking is one of the issues of paramount importance, which is emphasized by the charters and decisions of the United Nations, and the charters and laws of countries of the world, adding that the UAE stresses the fight against this inhuman crime, as stipulated in the legislation and works hard with The international community to confront it firmly, in defense of lofty values and human dignity
Her Excellency Dr. Ghada Wali, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, delivered a speech in which she said it is an honor to speak to you today on the occasion of the opening of the transregional meeting on combating trafficking in persons through airports
She extended her sincere thanks and appreciation to His Highness General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, for his continuous support
She also praised the close cooperation between the United Arab Emirates and the United Nations office in Abu Dhabi in the areas of drug and crime control, in addition to being the host country for the regional office for the Gulf Cooperation Council, the UAE is an important partner and a great supporter of the office in addressing criminal threats and promoting international cooperation
She stressed that the esteemed Ministry of Interior's hosting of today's meeting is a reflection of this pioneering role played by the UAE as a trans-regional platform that supports the implementation of the office's activities
